Skyeskyns is a family run business which was established in 1983. Skyeskyns’ hand tanning process has been created to demonstrate techniques almost unique in the UK and an expression of the distinctive remoteness of Skye and its crofting community. Visitors are shown an authentic process that Skyeskyns still use today. Most particular, is the practice of hand fleshing which is only done by Skyeskyns and one other tannery in the UK.
There is a free guided tour of the workshop used to create the unique sheepskins. You will see the traditional tools used such as the beam, paddles, racks and buffing wheel, horse and iron as well as the lengthy hand finishing process which helps to create the world famous Skyeskyns hand-combed fleece finish.
After the tour you will be shown up to the beautiful converted loft space where you can view, touch and feel the Skyeskyns that you will want to be able to make your own.
