Raasay House should be a name familiar to any students of the history of the Highlands and Western Islands. Once the seat of the MacLeod’s of Raasay, it was from this ancient pile that the infamous Clearances were locally co-ordinated. There are many tales, but perhaps Callum’s Road – a book, play and now film, is the most emotionally and socially significant telling.
It has been completely refurbished and renovated and ‘re’ reopened in 2013 by the Westminster representative, Charles Kennedy, MP. While it had been under restoration earlier, a massive blaze destroyed the newly-completed work. Now, this historic clan mansion house is in fine fettle and provides the perfect base to explore the beautiful and unique Islands of Raasay and Skye.
